A gooey, sticky mess. I wanted to like it but after only a week spent nearly two hours both removing the mess with orange cleaner and restringing my violin. I then put a piece of tape to mark across A, E, B and F# but within days took that off too. I realized that the struggle for proper intonation and the resulting frustration are inescapable parts of the learning curve. I might as well start sooner rather than later. My daughter loves this-- it is so colorful and easy to see where you put your fingers! Anything that makes her excited to play I am happy with. My daughter's instructor thought it was a bit overkill, and if your instructor is strict you might want to make sure it is OK with them first. Sometimes instructors want all of the violins to look alike or do not want you to look at your fingers. I could not figure out how to put this on the violin so make sure you don't throw away the packaging like I
Make sure you have metric measuring device
This item was purchased because I'm doing self-teaching on the fiddle. I figured it would be a good idea to have this to train my fingers while I'm learning. Since I'm used to fretted instruments this helps me visualize where my fingers should go. I like that it has the different colors for the different finger positions. I also like that it has perferations along the template so you can put as much or as little of the indicator on the fingerboard as you want.
